Configure nowPatio doors need to be practical but also attractive. With doors from windows24.com, these properties are always a given. However, if you have higher demands, compare the individual types carefully and choose the patio door that best suits the structural conditions and your requirements. In addition to smart-slide and tilt-and-slide doors, there are also lift-and-slide and bi-folding doors to choose from – each model has its own impressive features. Large window areas are just as possible with the right model as barrier-free installation or space-saving opening of the door.
Patio doors of uPVC are very inexpensive compared to wood or combination profile variants. On windows24.com, you have the choice between several profiles that offer energy efficiency up to passive house suitability. For even greater durability, robustness and weather protection, you will also find frames made of uPVC on the inside and aluminium on the outside. Lovers of naturalness opt for wood or composite models.
Different materials, opening types, as well as a variety of features for the patio door, allow for a personalised product. In this way, an individual patio door is created with the desired functions and a perfect visual fit for your home. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of individual materials is a good way of making a decision. Once the door has been chosen, it can be installed by professional fitters or by the customer. For amateur craftsmen, you will find videos and step-by-step instructions here.
Quality is a personal concern for us, which is why we produce all our patio doors in the best quality using the latest technology and the highest quality materials and components. Here you can get an idea of the made-to-measure production.
In the past, only wood was used for the production of patio doors but nowadays there is a wide range of materials available. Should I choose lightweight uPVC, durable aluminium, or an elegant composite material? Or is classic wood the right choice for me? This is a question you usually ask yourself fairly early on when you decide to buy a new patio door.
When choosing the material for a patio door, there are a few criteria to consider.
On the one hand, decisions are often made here according to personal taste and credo. On the other hand, there are some criteria to consider when choosing the material for your external door. For example, when installing a patio door in a listed building, the heritage office may want to have a say in the matter and make wood a mandatory material.
However, it doesn't make much sense to use wood on a heavily weathered side of the façade, for example, which may also be difficult to reach. This makes the necessary maintenance intervals for a new coat of paint for wooden French doors almost impossible, which would lead to rapid ageing and thus destruction of the element. Often, the purchase price for the patio door also plays a decisive role.
Patio doors are available in wood, wood-aluminium, uPVC, uPVC-aluminium or aluminium only. While almost all RAL colours are possible – and can even be chosen differently for the interior and exterior colour – for wood and wood-aluminium doors, uPVC patio doors are limited to the colour white and the respective decorative foils.
Different shapes and characteristics of the profiles allow an adaptation to the respective style and taste and allow an adjustment of the design.
A variety of designs and special types can be realised
Depending on your wishes, planning, position in the building or orientation, a wide range of designs and special types can be realised. The most modern manufacturing methods and production standards allow almost unlimited flexibility to make even the most unusual customer wishes possible.
"Patio doors are available with many features".
If you restrict patio doors to their function and technical construction, many similarities with a window are recognisable at first glance. This is also the reason why patio doors are often referred to as French windows or French doors.
If you take a closer look at patio doors, you will notice some details and features that clearly distinguish a patio door from an external French door.
The main distinguishing criterion is that a patio door is always mounted flush with the floor and offers the possibility of easy and, more significantly, barrier-free access from the interior to the outside, to a balcony or terrace.
Additional components such as aluminium floor thresholds, door gears or back function, extra locking points in the fittings and lockable handles make it possible to configure patio doors individually to suit every purpose and situation.
Windows, on the other hand, usually serve to ventilate the room, and provide natural light in the interior and provide external views. They are usually mounted on a sill that is approx. 90 cm high or, for design reasons, have a bottom light with glazing or panel.
Patio doors are available in four different opening variants: as a Smart-Slide door, a tilt-and-slide door, a lift-and-slide door and a bifold sliding door. The price, therefore, depends primarily on which system you choose as well as on the preferred material. For example, a Smart-Slide door of uPVC is available from €1,357 , and a lift-slide door of the same material from €2,761. If, however, you decide on a lift-slide model made of wood, you can expect prices starting at €3,451.
It is worth investing in good security technology for patio doors, as they are still, along with windows at ground level, one of the most popular entry points for burglars. In our configurator, we offer numerous options to increase break-in protection. The right glazing (e.g., toughened or laminated safety glass or impact-resistant glazing) makes it more difficult to break the window. Multi-point security fittings (optionally up to resistance class RC 2 N) prevent the door from being levered open. If you would like to use the door as a back door at the same time, we also recommend a door gear with a profile cylinder.
The ideal size of a patio door depends on many factors. A sliding door is usually used for large wall openings, while a classic French door is often more suitable for smaller openings. In addition to the type of door, the number of sashes also influences the dimensions. A guideline for a sash is 80 to 100 cm wide and approx. 200 cm high. However, you can always determine the size of your door individually on windows24.com. The minimum and maximum dimensions are displayed directly in the configurator, and should these not be sufficient, simply contact our customer service.
The most obvious difference between the two doors is their opening type, which is already reflected in the respective name. On lift-and-slide doors, the sash is lifted slightly while opening and then conveniently slides to the side on rollers. This means that even very large and heavy sashes are possible. In addition, a lift-and-slide door can also be installed barrier-free, which is unfortunately not feasible with tilt-and-slide doors. These have the advantage that they offer a convenient tilt function for easy ventilation. To open the door fully, the movable sash slides along parallelly to the fixed element.
Bi-folding doors are ideal for very wide glass surfaces. Thanks to their special construction, the door front can be opened completely if necessary. The greatest advantage of a bifold door, however, is that it can be opened in an extremely space-saving manner even with large opening widths. The individual sashes are simply folded together.
The type of glazing you choose for your patio door depends largely on your personal requirements and wishes. To improve thermal insulation, for example, you can choose from a range of double and triple insulating glazing with a Ug value of up to 0.6 W/m²K. If you live near a main road or are exposed to other noise, we also recommend soundproof glazing up to class 5. And to improve break-in protection, we also offer laminated safety glass and break-through-resistant glazing.
